Before flying solo, all pilots must hold a valid medical certificate. If you are training for a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), you will need a UK CAA Class 2 medical. At Aviation Academy Scotland, we make this process as simple as possible with our in-house CAA-approved examiner, allowing you to complete your medical quickly and efficiently.

1. When Do I Need to Get My Class 2 Medical?

  • You do not need a medical certificate to start training, but you must obtain one before your first solo flight.

  • We recommend booking your medical within the first two weeks of training to avoid any delays in your progression.

2. How to Book Your Class 2 Medical

At Aviation Academy Scotland, you can complete your Class 2 medical on-site with our in-house examiner, making the process convenient and efficient. To book:

  • Contact our operations team to schedule an appointment.

  • Ensure you bring a valid form of ID (passport or driving licence).

  • Complete the CAA Medical Application Form online before your appointment.

If you prefer, you can also book an appointment with a CAA-approved aeromedical examiner (AME) elsewhere. A full list of approved AMEs can be found on the UK CAA website.

3. What Happens During the Medical Examination?

The Class 2 medical includes:

  • General health assessment (medical history review, BMI check).

  • Vision test – Ensuring acceptable eyesight standards.

  • Hearing test – Confirming ability to meet aviation requirements.

  • Blood pressure check – Ensuring it falls within safe limits.

  • Urine test – Screening for medical conditions.

If you meet all requirements, your Class 2 medical certificate will be issued on the same day.

4. Considering a Future Commercial Pilot Career?

If you plan to progress to a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) in the future, you will eventually need a Class 1 medical. If you have any concerns about meeting the Class 1 medical standards, we strongly advise that you:

  • Obtain a Class 1 medical before starting training.

  • Discuss any potential medical concerns with a CAA-approved aeromedical examiner.

🚨 Important: No refunds will be given for enrolment fees or training undertaken if a student is later unable to obtain a Class 1 medical.

5. Need Help Booking Your Medical?

If you have any questions or need assistance scheduling your Class 2 medical, our team is happy to help.
