One of the most common questions aspiring pilots ask is whether they need a medical certificate before they start flight training. The short answer is no—you do not need a medical certificate to begin training at Aviation Academy Scotland. However, you will need one before you can fly solo.

1. When Do I Need a Medical Certificate?

  • You do not need a medical certificate to start your initial flight training.

  • You must have a valid medical certificate before your first solo flight.

  • If you are training towards a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), you will need a UK Class 1 Medical Certificatebefore advancing to commercial training.

2. What Type of Medical Certificate Do I Need?

The type of medical certificate you need depends on your training goals:

  • Private Pilot Licence (PPL): Requires a UK Class 2 Medical Certificate.

  • Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL): Requires a UK Class 1 Medical Certificate.

3. Where Can I Get a Medical Certificate?

  • Medical exams must be conducted by a CAA-approved Aeromedical Examiner (AME).

  • Aviation Academy Scotland can help you arrange your medical exam with a trusted examiner.

  • If you are unsure whether you will pass a medical, we recommend obtaining one before investing significantly in training.

4. What Does the Medical Exam Involve?

The medical exam includes checks on:

  • Vision and hearing

  • Heart and lung function

  • General physical health

  • Medical history and any ongoing conditions

5. Can I Start Training Without a Medical?

Yes! You can begin your training immediately and arrange your medical exam within the first few weeks. However, if you choose to start without obtaining a medical, please note:

  • No refunds will be issued if you are unable to obtain the required medical certificate.

  • We strongly recommend booking your medical early to avoid delays in your training progression.
