Are there any age limits?

Age is an important factor when starting flight training, and at Aviation Academy Scotland, we follow the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) guidelines for minimum and maximum age limits. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Minimum Age Requirements

  • 16 years old – The minimum age to fly solo during training for a Private Pilot Licence (PPL).

  • 17 years old – The minimum age to hold a PPL.

  • 18 years old – The minimum age to start your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).

2. Maximum Age Limits

There is no official maximum age limit for learning to fly, but there are some considerations:

  • You must be able to meet the medical requirements (Class 2 for PPL, Class 1 for CPL).

  • Some airlines may have upper age limits for new hires (typically under 35 for cadet schemes but no strict limit for experienced pilots).

  • Private flying has no upper age restriction, as long as you hold a valid medical certificate.

3. Can I Start Training as a Teenager?

  • Yes! Many students begin training while still in school.

  • We offer Flight Training Experience Weeks for younger students to get started.

  • If you start young, you can complete training in phases and be career-ready by 18-20.

4. Can I Become a Commercial Pilot If I Start Later in Life?

  • Absolutely! Many people train for a career change later in life.

  • Airlines consider experience and ability more than age.

  • If you meet medical and licensing requirements, age should not be a barrier.

Start Training at Any Age!

Whether you’re a teenager dreaming of flying or considering a career change later in life, Aviation Academy Scotland offers flexible training options to suit you.
