If you are training to become a commercial pilot, you will need to obtain a UK CAA Class 1 medical certificate before you can hold a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). This medical ensures that you meet the necessary health standards for a career in aviation.
1. When Should I Get My Class 1 Medical?
You do not need a Class 1 medical to start training at Aviation Academy Scotland, but you will need it before beginning commercial flight training.
If you plan to pursue a commercial pilot career, we strongly recommend getting your Class 1 medical as early as possible—even before starting your Private Pilot Licence (PPL).
If you have any concerns about passing the Class 1 medical, you should obtain it before enrolling, as no refunds will be given for enrolment fees or training undertaken if you are unable to obtain it later.
2. How to Book a UK CAA Class 1 Medical
Unlike a Class 2 medical (which can be obtained with local examiners), a Class 1 medical must be conducted at an approved UK CAA Aeromedical Centre (AeMC). Follow these steps to book:
Step 1: Find an Approved Aeromedical Centre
You must complete your medical examination at a CAA-approved Aeromedical Centre. Locations include:
Civil Aviation Authority Aeromedical Centre (Gatwick)
Manchester AeMC
Various other private AeMCs across the UK
A full list of approved AeMCs can be found on the UK CAA website.
Step 2: Complete Your CAA Medical Application
Before your appointment, you will need to:
Create an online CAA medical account (if you don’t already have one).
Complete the required medical forms through the CAA portal.
Pay the applicable medical examination fee (costs vary by location but are typically between £600-£700).
Step 3: Attend Your Medical Examination
At your appointment, the examination will include:
Medical history review
Comprehensive vision test (corrective lenses are permitted within limits)
Hearing test
ECG (Electrocardiogram) to assess heart function
Blood pressure check
Lung function test
Urine test (diabetes and kidney function screening)
General health assessment
Mental health evaluation (to assess overall psychological fitness for a commercial aviation career)
If all requirements are met, you will receive your Class 1 medical certificate, usually on the same day.
3. What If I Don’t Pass the Class 1 Medical?
If any concerns arise during your medical assessment:
You may be referred for further medical tests or specialist review.
In some cases, limitations or restrictions may be placed on your certificate.
If you are unable to obtain a Class 1 medical, you may still be eligible for a Class 2 medical, allowing you to fly privately or pursue a Flight Instructor role.
🚨 Important: If you plan to become a commercial pilot but have any doubts about meeting the Class 1 medical requirements, it is best to obtain your Class 1 medical before committing to training, as no refunds will be given for enrolment or training already undertaken if you are later unable to obtain it.
