This training is delivered via distance learning by Aeros.
The Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) Theory Course is a structured distance learning programme designed to equip aspiring commercial pilots with the in-depth theoretical knowledge required for professional aviation. The course consists of 13 mandatory subjects, covering everything from meteorology and navigation to aircraft systems and flight planning.
ATPL theory is a mandatory requirement for pilots progressing towards a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Instrument Rating (IR). The course is delivered via distance learning, allowing students to study at their own pace while completing flight training.
Objectives
Gain a deep understanding of aviation theory to prepare for commercial flying
Meet the UK CAA requirements for ATPL theoretical knowledge
Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in an operational aviation environment
Prepare for ATPL examinations required for commercial flight training
Entry Requirements
Hold a UK CAA Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
Hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate (recommended before CPL training)
Proficiency in English (ICAO Level 4 or higher)
Strong self-discipline and time management skills for independent study
Course Structure
ATPL Subjects (13 Exams)
The ATPL theory syllabus is divided into three key areas: Air Law & Procedures, Aircraft Technical Knowledge, and Flight Planning & Operations.
1. Air Law & Procedures
Air Law – International and national aviation regulations
Operational Procedures – Standard operating procedures, emergency procedures, and passenger safety
2. Aircraft Technical Knowledge
Meteorology – Weather systems, forecasting, and aviation meteorology
Principles of Flight – Aerodynamics and flight mechanics
Aircraft General Knowledge – Airframe, engines, and systems
Instrumentation – Flight instruments, warning systems, and avionics
3. Flight Planning & Operations
Human Performance & Limitations – Physiology, fatigue, and decision-making
Performance – Aircraft performance calculations and limitations
Flight Planning & Monitoring – Route planning, fuel calculations, and alternate aerodrome selection
Mass & Balance – Weight distribution, centre of gravity, and aircraft loading
Radio Navigation – VOR, NDB, ILS, GPS, and other navigation aids
General Navigation – Map reading, dead reckoning, and time-distance calculations
Communications – Radio telephony procedures and phraseology
Training Format
Distance Learning Approach
